A rust red floor in the woods: a Mediterranean paradise in Vallromanes
In harmony with nature, our rust red terracotta floor blend seamlessly with the luxury of an exclusive home
This extension of the outdoor space of a family unit house in Vallromanes, signed by Cotas Estudio, is a landscape project. Through materials and careful design, they have managed to create an oasis of wellbeing in the incomparable setting of the Catalonian forest. From the rust red terracotta floors that embellish, insulate and protect the patio floors, to the simple lines of the minimalist furniture, the entire design of this project is designed to integrate the landscape into the house, and the house into the landscape.
This family unit is located in an idyllic place, with the enchanted woods of Catalonia spread out before its privileged porch. Cotas Estudio has designed a space that celebrates both the outdoor context and the indoor wellness. This project is adjusted to the original location of local flora. The disposition of the floors and covers work around the trees and bushes, which have been left intact. The swimming pool is enclosed by a flower bed that houses different kinds of native flora, and a Nordic jacuzzi (a ground level and circular shaped hot tub) has been installed on the same deck, overlooking the woods. We can also find on the project a garden area, a terrace covered by a pergola, and a brazier area.
Rust red terracotta floor to delimit space
What makes this project so special is that it celebrates all natural elements without giving up on the comfort that technology has to offer. The outer space of the villa combines several different functionalities, which are only delimited by the furniture and the materials on the floor.
For the pool side and the brazier area, our Rectángulo 40×10 and Medio Ladrillo 25x6x3 have been used to create an elegant rust red terracotta floor. In addition to harmonizing chromatically with the natural environment, it allows for clearly distinguishing that part of the space from the covered terrace, which has a hardwood floor.
Fired clay for hydro-thermal regulation
Part of the winning formula of this project lies in the choice of materials that contribute to energetic efficiency. Terracotta floors have been used for thousands of years with (amongst others) the purpose of hydro-thermal control of inhabited spaces. Its properties keep surfaces stable, temperature wise. Which is perfect in this scenario: an outdoor recreation area that receives countless hours of direct sun in the hot Spanish summer. Same principle applies to the brazier area, which is thought to enjoy the company of family and friends in this privileged setting.
It’s been a fantastic experience for us that the Catalonian firm has chosen our artisanal, handmade terracotta tiles to lay the perfect ground for this marvelous space.
