Art and Architecture
Art and architecture
On todobarro’s blog we publish articles about Art and Architecture: two disciplines closely related to our work, which often find common ground in our clay floors.
architecture
From Latin architectūra.
1. f. The art of designing and constructing buildings.
art
From Latin ars, artis, and this calque from Greek τέχνη téchnē.
2. m. or f. Manifestation of human activity through which reality is interpreted or the imagination is expressed using plastic, linguistic, or sound resources.
If there is one thing that is fascinating about the material we work with, it is its versatility. Fired clay builds, decorates, and expresses at the same time. It is one of the few materials that does not require us to choose between functionality and artistic expression.
Since its architectural use began thousands of years ago, it has been used as both an artistic and decorative material.
This capacity for expression doubles its effectiveness when we transfer it to the design and expressiveness of floors, tiles, and mosaics. It is a tradition inherited from our ancestors in al-Andalus, who, living in an iconoclastic culture, found in calligraphy and geometry the highest form of artistic expression, and in fired clay its best medium.
Tradition and innovation for our clay floors
The combination of disciplines, research, and investment in development and experimentation is one of our trademarks. We know that to keep a tradition alive, we must look to both the past and the future.
That is why, in order to frame our clay walls and floors within the context that contains their entire history and possible trajectory, we talk about art and architecture in our blog.
We also explore the very concept of art, design, and beauty that we use at todobarro to make our terracotta pieces.
Because if anything, art is subjective, and we want to bring that subjectivity into the realm of experience, craftsmanship, and good taste.
Our bet on design
To say someone is pioneering craftsmanship might seem an oxymoron, but todobarro has restored production means that, in our view, never should have been…
