FAQ
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get. If there is anything else you need to know, we'll be happy to assist you.
Are todobarro tiles suitable for fireplaces?
The terracotta pieces sold todobarro (antique fired clay, glazed terracotta tiles, high-temperature terracotta and zellige) are not suitable for use in ovens, grills or fireplaces, as they have not been designed for this purpose.
Direct contact between our bricks and tiles and open flames or fire must be avoided in order to preserve the integrity of the pieces and ensure their long-term survival. That said, we must also point out that all of our pieces are Class A1 according to the EN 13501-2 standard. The UNE-EN 13501-2 standard is a European classification that categorizes the reaction of constructive materials and elements to fire. It is mainly used as a safety measure to predict how each product may contribute to the start and spread of flames in the event of a fire, and the classification ranges from Class A1, which indicates non-combustible products that do not contribute to fire at any stage, to class F, which applies to products of unknown performace or highly combustible products.
In the technical data sheets for our products you’ll find a detailed list of all the parameters, values and regulations to which we subjetc our ceramic tiles, bricks and terracotta pieces. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team using the form above.
Can I combine tiles of different finishes?
Our fired clay finishes and glaze colors can be perfectly combinable with each other. In our Projects section, you can find examples of how our customers and partners have used our different types of tiles, either exclusively or in combination, in all kinds of settings.
When combining finishes, it is important to bear in mind that there may be differences in the shrinkage of the clay, and you will need to play around with the joints between two tiles in the same row to make the pieces fit together. The difference between these joints with pieces of different finishes can be up to 5 millimeters, depending on the type of finish and the combination used.
Our technical office can advise you on the most suitable solution for your project. The only limit is your imagination!
Can a fired clay flooring be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes! Fired clay or terracotta is actually the perfect material to install over underfloor heating, because of its bioclimatic properties. It has high thermal inertia, which allows it to accumulate heat very quickly and release it gradually. This unique feature leads to better confort outcomes in extreme weather, and increases the efficiency of the underfloor heating and tempers the rooms with lower energy consumption.
Are terracotta tiles slippery?
All our unglazed tiles comply with the highest category of slip resistance standards (according to the UNE 41901 EX standard, which determines slip resistance using the friction pendulum method). todobarro ceramic tiles are classified as C3 class, which is standard for areas with a high risk of slipping, such as outdoor areas with swimming pools and similar environments.
In the case of glazed fired clay, it is necessary to apply solutions aimed at reducing the slipperiness caused by the glazes. We can advise you on how to implement these solutions in your project.
In the technical data sheets for our products, you will find a detailed list of all the parameters, values, and standards to which we subject our ceramic tiles, bricks, and tiles. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team using the form above.
CE marking for handmade terracotta
The CE marking is mandatory for certain products manufactured and marketed within the European Union. It is only mandatory on products covered by harmonized EU standards that specifically require it, such as toys, drones, electrical and electronic devices, pyrotechnic products, boats, certain types of pressure equipment, gas appliances, batteries and machinery, weighing and measuring equipment, personal protective equipment, and medical devices.
The regulations that apply to and define the CE marking in our field are restricted to “ceramic tiles manufactured by extrusion and dry pressing,” so our products, which are completely handmade, are not subject to these regulations.
Even so, at todobarro we always provide the technical data sheets and descriptions necessary to prove the quality and performance of our material, as well as a binding declaration of performance that technically sets out the results of the various tests carried out on our products, which you can request by contacting our team.
Is fired clay resistant to frost?
It depends. Our different finishes have different properties: we do not recommend installing antique terracotta tiles, glazed ceramic tiles, or zellige tiles outdoors in areas subject to freezing temperatures. However, our high-temperature fired clay line is resistant to freezing temperatures. You can download the technical data sheets detailing the characteristics of the materials here:
The frost resistance of our products has been tested in the laboratory, according to the test method set out in the UNE-EN ISO 10545-12 standard: Ceramic tiles. Determination of frost resistance, demonstrating that our material satisfactorily meets the performance requirements established by current regulations, as no damage was found in any of the pieces after subjecting them to 100 freeze-thaw cycles.
This is a minimum requirement but not sufficient to ensure the durability of ceramic tiles against the phenomenon of frost in the long term. A good reference is to observe whether fired clay is a material that is commonly used in the area where it is to be installed, as the best test of how a material will respond over time to local weather conditions is to see how it is used in vernacular architecture.
Can glazed terracotta tiles be used for kitchen countertops?
Our glazed tiles are not intended for use in food handling.
This fact must be taken into account when installing them on countertops, and appropriate utensils must always be used to place and handle food, in addition to cleaning any food that falls on the countertop before consumption.
On our Projects page, you can find numerous examples of how other clients have used our fired clay glazed tiles in their kitchens. Our technical team will help you make the best choice for your project.
Does fired clay provide acoustic insulation?
Terracotta cladding can improve the acoustic conditions of a room, but these depend on the entire building structure. Fired clay is a dense, porous material that absorbs sound waves and reduces echo in a space. However, the acoustics of a room depend on the mass present, so installing fired clay cladding helps improve acoustics, but it is not a 100% insulating measure.
We recommend ceramic tiles as a soundproofing measure when combined with other measures designed for the same purpose. A terracotta floor, wall, or cladding guarantees a warm and welcoming space, as it not only improves acoustic conditions but also acts as a thermal regulator, which is why it has been used for thousands of years as a key element of bioclimatic architecture.
Antique or Tradicional Finish?
Antique and traditional are the two finishes that we offer for our artisanal terracotta.
Traditional. This is the finish that the piece has when it comes out of the oven. Typical characteristics of this finish:
- The piece can only be used on one side.
- The edges and corners of the tiles and glazed ceramic azulejos are straighter.
Antique.A double process is used to age the pieces so that they take on the appearance of reclaimed terracotta with an older and more distressed-looking finish.
- Can be used on both sides. This makes it possible to play around and experiment by increasing or reducing tonal variation in the overall surface.
- The edges and corners are rounded, and the faces are smoothened by the aging process. The pieces take on a more velvety feel.
- The aging process causes weaker pieces to break and thus get discarded, meaning that the final product is more robust and resistant.

How soon will I receive my order?
As we offer (and our clients request) a significant degree of personalization, we do not hold our
products in stock but rather produce them to order.
Our material is an artisanal product that is produced by hand and fired in an Arabic oven. This means a manufacturing process of:
- 40–45 days for artisanal terracotta.
- 50-60 days for glazed terracotta.
During this time, the material goes through the following processes:
- Casting of the pieces.
- Air-drying. It is through this process that the pieces acquire the necessary rigidity and stiffness to be fired in the oven. The duration of this step can end up being longer or shorter depending on the prevailing weather conditions.
- Firing in an Arabic or Nasrid-style oven. This is a process whereby the pieces are fired at gradually increasing temperatures and then subsequently cooled.
- Aging process. The pieces undergo a wearing process to acquire our Antique texture.
- Finally, the pieces are palletized and transported to our clients. Delivery times will depend on your geographic location. This might be one day if you are based in the local area or several weeks if the order has to be transported across international borders.
As with any artisanal process, the production times indicated are only an estimate and may vary depending on weather conditions, which are beyond our control.
Are the products protected upon delivery?
Our handmade clay products are not delivered with protection. You can download our guide to cleaning and protecting todobarro floors for a detailed description of the recommended protection process, which is carried out after the tiles have been installed and cleaned. After allowing the floor to dry completely after cleaning (usually between 4 and 10 days), the protective treatment is applied.
To protect our ceramic tiles, bricks, and wall tiles, specialized products must be applied manually and then left to dry completely. Our technical team offers personalized advice on the most appropriate protective measures for each project, and on our blog you will find useful tips on how to clean and maintain your terracotta floors and walls.
In addition, our technical team offers personalized advice on how to meet the specific protection needs of each project.
Could I use todobarro on my salt chlorination pool?
The constant contact with salt may affect terracotta tiles. The continuous supply of salts causes them to deposit on the surface layers of the tiles, forming efflorescence. This kind of deposits can be very harmful for terracotta tiles since they can cause the superficial disintegration of the pieces.
We do not advise installing terracotta as crowning of saline pools. However, if you still wish to use it, the effects can be minimized by applying water-repellent products such as Mitrol.
