Is fired clay resistant to frost?
It depends. Our different finishes have different properties: we do not recommend installing antique terracotta tiles, glazed ceramic tiles, or zellige tiles outdoors in areas subject to freezing temperatures. However, our high-temperature fired clay line is resistant to freezing temperatures. You can download the technical data sheets detailing the characteristics of the materials here:
The frost resistance of our products has been tested in the laboratory, according to the test method set out in the UNE-EN ISO 10545-12 standard: Ceramic tiles. Determination of frost resistance, demonstrating that our material satisfactorily meets the performance requirements established by current regulations, as no damage was found in any of the pieces after subjecting them to 100 freeze-thaw cycles.
This is a minimum requirement but not sufficient to ensure the durability of ceramic tiles against the phenomenon of frost in the long term. A good reference is to observe whether fired clay is a material that is commonly used in the area where it is to be installed, as the best test of how a material will respond over time to local weather conditions is to see how it is used in vernacular architecture.
