Terracotta floors and tiles
Sustainable fired clay neo-craftsmanship
Handmade terracotta tiles with artisanal textures, design and colors
Timeless, versatile, sustainable and long-lasting are just some of the adjectives that apply to terracotta tiles and floors. We make our pieces by hand, one by one, in our Vélez-Málaga eco-shop: a space where we strive to keep our the innovative, sustainable and excelent features of our trade alive.
We use technology and tradition to our advantage to offer a selection of fired clay floors and walls that draw from both clay’s millennia-old tradition and the most avant-garde trends from the national and international landscape. There is one floor for each project amongst our catalogue, but also specialize in working hand in hand with our clients to create custom-made tiles that pefectly adapt to each project’s needs.
Our interdisciplinary team works thoroughly to make sure that each and every one of our clay floors measure up to our quality standards. From the designers to our master craftsmen, every single one of our tiles are submitted to an exhaustive screening process to ensure the quality of the pieces. Our team’s work has been acknowledged by the most prestigious publications and entities of our business.
Features of a traditional handmade terracotta floor
Within our fired clay floors, we distinguish four different categories: Antique terracotta tiles, high temperature terracotta tiles, Antique glazed tiles and zellige. Each of these have their own characteristic features, which are dependent on the pre and post production processes specific to each of them, but there are a number of feature all of them have in common:
- A smooth, nice texture to the touch, achieved through our controlled aging process, or the traditional glazing of our natural primers. In spite of our design’s contemporaneity, all our pieces maintain intact the aesthetic essence of traditional terracotta floors and tiles.
- Subtle decolorations on the tile’s surfaces as a result of the cooking process in our kilns, which prove the artisanal nature of our work. All of our colors, both in our tiles and glazed tiles, are inspired and sourced from pigments found in nature.
- Two sides for each tile, with two different textures and porosities, which ensures not only that there are not two identical pieces, but that there are not two identical todobarro floors. Artisanal products are one hundred percent originals, and so are our floors.
- The durability and resistance characteristics of this material, which has been used for thousands of years as an architectural and decorative element due to its ideal properties. Although different methods of firing clay result in different levels of resistance to different environments, all our floors and walls are designed to withstand everyday use safely and over the long term.
After molding the tiles by hand, one by one, we leave them to air dry in our shop. Afterwards, we cook them in our traditional Nasrid kilns or ovens. We feed those with biofuel (such as olive pits and pruning waste from local farms that were going to be burned anyway), and once they are done we store, pack and ship them in plastic free and 100% reusable containers, all in order to reduce to the minimum our carbon footprint.
