How to choose the right bathroom tiles
Choosing the right tiles for our bathroom is an important step to achieve the vibe we want for the room
When it comes to designing, remodeling or reforming a space, choosing what kind of tiles we want for our walls and floor is just as important as choosing the furniture, the materials or the decor. Here is a quick guide to help you identify which parameters you need to consider beofre choosing your bathroom tiles.
How to choose your bathroom tiles
Color use is important in any project. There is color on our clothes, on our websites, on our house’s walls, on our tableware… Our color choices tell a story about who we are, and provoke an emotional reaction in others.
Most bathrooms are different. Designing a wall or a floor will require its own set of considerations depending on different factors. It won’t be the same process for a three foot wide bathroom with a big skylight than for a small complementary restroom with artificial light.
Practicality first
Terracotta glazed tiles can have different uses in specialized rooms, such as a bathroom. One could make a selection of pieces with a strictly decorative purpose, like WOHA studio did here. Or, one could cover more extensive areas, not just with aesthetic but also insulative claims. Our advice? When you are thinking about the part you want your tiles to play in your bathroom, give a wide manoeuvre margin to your imagination!
Don’t discard the possibility of creating original designs, patterns and combinations. You don’t have to limit the project to the traditionally tile-clad areas of a bathroom: any surface is susceptible to be a canvas for your ideas. We’ll support you in the creative process!
Space dimension
Before choosing a kind of glazed tile, you need to have a clear picture of the surface you need to cover. To play with different dimensions inside a single space is a way of generating original effects and creating diversity inside the home.
Weigh up whether the project asks for a wall, a floor or a ceiling clad with glazed tiles (maybe a combination of the three?). You must take into account what kind of furniture will go in what places to get the most out of whatever design you choose. You probably won’t want the same wall if you have a walk-in shower than if you are planning on a big bathtub.
Once the space’s dimensions are clear, you can start to think about the format and the color of the pieces. And for that, it is convenient to keep in mind…
The bathroom’s lighting
What is going to be the light source? Is it natural or artificial? In case the room get exterior light, is it through a window or a skylight? If so, what is the orientation? All of these questions serve to determine what kind of light the room is going to get, and select a tile color that will work in favour of whatever kind of effect is wished. You could need a single strip of white terracotta tiles to accentuate a design point, our you could use a full dramatic wall of dark chocolate triangular glazed tiles, and a lot of it will depend on the light.
A color explosion in your bathroom’s tiles
Our experience has taught us that the best projects are those that reflect the client’s personalities. Playing with shape, color and texture in the room’s surfaces is perfectly doable, thanks to the great color variety you’ll find in our catalogue.
Thanks to the traditional cooking and glazing processes we subject our tiles to, there aren’t two identical pieces in our entire work. Such is the result of consciously avoiding mass-production: each tile is unique and different. That originality, of course, is by no means incompatible with tactile and chromatic uniformity.
Our color palette is composed of different shades that even when presenting slight natural variations and hues, form a solid and stable ensemble. But going back to the main subject, what tile color is better for a bathroom?
Blue glazed tiles
A bathroom, swimming pool and kitchen classic. Any place where there is water, really. Our Aguamarina and Añil colors are big hits around those kinds of places.
- Aguamarina’s tone is ideal for creating a peaceful and airy atmosphere. The hues within this tone vary from intense sky blue to clear grey, and together they make up a soft palette, filled with light.
- For a more dramatic effect, there is our Añil color. This shade is one of our deepest glazed blues. Añil, or indigo, is a signature color of Mediterranean cultures, although today it is used all around the world for its intensity and depth.
Bright colored glazed tiles for your bathroom
For your information, it is in fact not illegal to tile a bathroom in a color other than blue. Here are a couple of suggestions for those who dare to dream:
- Our Zamarut color provides a relaxed but dynamic and spirited atmosphere. The Zamarut set is inspired in the depths of the Mediterranean sea, so it is perfect for any and all Mediterranean vibes.
- Our Alhambra color is inspired by the mythical Andalusian monument. Get an effortlessly vibrant and passionate aura to fill the room with presence and personality.
