Terracotta screens
Handmade terracotta screens: a new tradition
Our artisanal terracotta screens are a reinvention of traditional Andalusian lattice screens, so characteristic of our region. With a design inspired by the province of Málaga, we keep all the features of this staple of Mediterranean architecture, through an innovative gaze that prioritizes design, functionality and sustainability in equal measure.
Historically, the main function of latticework was to see without being seen, and to protect privacy both within homes facing the street and within the different spaces of the houses themselves. In Mediterranean cultures, where social and domestic life was lived collectively, it was essential.
With the emergence of new types of housing and separating elements (blinds, fences, stained glass windows, etc.), the social function of lattice screens has gradually diminished, but it remains an element that allows for visual separation of spaces without impeding the flow of air and light.
Which brings us to its secondary role: the bioclimatic function. Fired clay is a material that naturally regulates humidity in the environment: when it is very humid, it absorbs moisture, and when it is very dry, it releases it slowly. This quality makes it a thermoregulatory material, and its use contributes to the well-being of the space.
Create your own terracotta screen with our modular pieces
As with all our pieces, we craft our terracotta screens by hand, using local clays. We then fire them and subject them to a controlled aging process that softens their texture, achieving our trademark Antique texture.
In this first collection of terracotta screens, we present six different models and two accessories: birdhouses and plant pots. Each piece has a base of 12 or 14 centimeters, forming a modular system in which the different models can be combined in different ways, offering the possibility of customizing the latticework to fit exactly with the vision of each project.
By adding planters to the structure (available, like most pieces, in two different sizes), we invoke the Mediterranean tradition of combining clay and vegetation to create fresh, lively, and healthy spaces. Our fired clay screens constitute the perfect environment to sustain the life of domestic plants, which in turn contribute to the overall health of the space they inhabit, and to support ecosystems outdoors.
Walls, facades, and exterior latticework have always served as a foundation for nurturing local ecosystems, and this collection of traditional terracotta screens not only allows but also encourages coexistence with native fauna and flora. To reinforce this point, you can incorporate our birdhouses, also available in two sizes, which, in addition to contributing to the well-being of the environment, will bring along a beautiful soundtrack.
