Glazed terracotta pavement for WOHA

Our glazed terracotta pieces have been used in a beautiful work garden created by WOHA at the site of their very own architectural studio.

The devil is in the details, as the old saying goes. That the devil is in the details can only mean that the brilliance of a project—that je ne sais quoi which makes all the difference—resides in its smallest parts, and also in the care employed during each and every activity which forms part of the creative process. There is no doubt that this premise reigns supreme at the WOHA architectural studio, and so we are thrilled that they have chosen to use our tiles in order to inject some genuine identity into their very own studio space with a glazed terracotta pavement.

Glazed terracotta pavement meets concrete

Architects Antonio Maciá Mateu and Ana Mora Vitoria are the masterminds behind this project which gave shape to their headquarters in Elche, near Alicante. They drew inspiration from the landscaped patios which form a key part of traditional homes in the Valencian countryside where they are based. These are spaces replete with vegetation and materials in earthy colors extracted from the local area, just like the clay used for our terracotta.

In order to transpose this bucolic concept into their workspace, they installed concrete pavements adorned with glazed terracotta incrustations. Concretely, they opted for one of our most popular combined formats, our Prometheus Penrose, which is comprised of a square tile and a Rombo Penrose 20 Wide at a ratio of one to one and in tonalities of rojiza (rust red) and pizarra (slate), which lend a nod of recognition to that much sought-after rural tradition.

Working in the garden

The true protagonists of this project are the longitudinally positioned natural planters which configure this peculiar “interior patio” and which are fitted with a drip irrigation system. This, in combination with natural light, allows the plant life to grow and advance towards the ceiling, where it creates an atmosphere that constantly changes ever so slowly, alive and in continuous movement at all times.

The materials and natural elements in the garden complement and mutually reinforce one another. We very much enjoy seeing our terracotta floors in spaces which are designed to be enjoyed, used and, even beyond that, to serve as a source of inspiration for new projects.

In short, we are delighted to have helped play a role in creating this gorgeous garden for WOHA
