Apartments in Sines, Portugal

One of our first incursions into Portugal was Sines, in the form of some gorgeous tourist apartments which use our terracotta tiles.

Isabelle Puech left her job in the world of fashion after almost 30 years of work. During this period, she also dedicated her time to the restoration of spaces and to interior design, which was something that she displayed a natural flair for. For personal reasons, Puech decided to shake things up and leave her native Paris for Sines, a city on a stretch of Portuguese coastline belonging to the district of Setúbal, in the region of Alentejo. This is were the tourist apartments in Portugal we are talking about are.

A passion for authentic materials

Isabelle felt an immediate pang of affection for her first home in the region. She restored it and decorated it with vintage materials and objects imported from France. Once she was settled, she bought a second house in Sines with the intention of transforming it into five apartments to be used as local accommodations. Despite having a somewhat more modest budget for the first house, she knew that she wanted to decorate it in the same way, but this time using local supplies and materials.

In her demanding search for authenticity and for interesting and original construction materials, she crossed the border into Spain and found our artisanal terracotta tiles. Once more, that same pang of instant affection.

We chose todobarro for the incredible creativity of their designs and the excellent and attentive assistance that we got from Pedro (CEO of todobarro). I am planning a new project in 2021, and todobarro will again be a part of it. —Isabelle Puech

Terracotta tiles for tourist apartments in Portugal

The course of the project was set by our design in three pieces of Cuadrado 20 in shades of rustic pizarra (slate) and Baraca in a square format, a format which lends antique terracotta pavements a classic and elegant character without renouncing contemporary design.

This combination works well in both outdoor and indoor spaces. It is precisely on the outdoor terrace where the terracotta takes on the greatest warmth, nicely complemented by the gorgeous views over the Port of Sines. Isabelle knew just how to capture that classic Mediterranean style of traditional Portuguese homes, where our tiles are a perfect fit. If you ever visit Sines, perhaps you might just stay in these apartments and enjoy the supreme combination of terracotta and the sea.
